Housam Hashim was seen driving a Mercedes CLK200 in an erratic manner at around 4.45pm on December 13.

The 55-year-old, of Hedge Place Road, Greenhithe, was seen swerving from lane-to-lane on the A1 in Cambridgeshire, driving along the central reservation and the grass verge.

He also tailgated other drivers, flashing his headlights to signal to get out of the way.

Another driver reported Hashim’s driving was so poor, he had to overtake him to get as far away from him as possible.

Police were informed of the car’s maneuvering and waited at the Haddon Services flyover at near Peterborough to keep an eye out.

Hashim was spotted immediately as he was serving repeatedly between lanes.

Officers stopped him and found a half-empty bottle of wine in the passenger footwell.

He was asked to get out of his car but needed help as he could barely stand, a Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said.

Hashim’s breath test result was 125 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He later refused to supply a blood sample while in custody.

On Wednesday, February 7, at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, he admitted failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis.

He was banned from driving for two years and eight months and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

PC Dougie McColm said: “Hashim showed a complete disregard for other road users – it was a miracle he didn’t cause a serious collision that evening.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who called in with concerns and I would urge anyone else with such concerns to please do the same. It can literally save lives.”
