Two lanes were subsequently reopened but traffic was reported to be queuing back through the Dartford tunnels to Junction 3 at the M20 interchange near Swanley.

Traffic remained slow several hours later, with one lane remaining closed for repairs.

As of about 6.30pm, there were still about four miles of queuing traffic, with delays of up to 10 minutes.
