Two lanes were closed following the smash, along with the right-hand tunnel. They have all been reopened but the gridlock remained into the evening.

At its worst, congestion stretched back past Junction 3 at the Swanley interchange to Junction 4 at Orpington.

Traffic through Dartford and along the A2 between Dartford Heath and the Ebbsfleet interchange was also affected, as drivers attempted to join the M25 at Darenth.
