Ambulance crews were also called and a motorcyclist in his 30's was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The east tunnel was closed to traffic for much of the day but reopened shortly after 4pm.

There remains huge queues on the A282 in Kent with long tailbacks stretching back between junctions 2 and 4. A vehicle is also understood to have broken down but has since been moved.

Rush hour queues are building on the A2 where there is slow moving traffic in both directions on the approach to the Darenth Interchange.

Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes and National Highways are reporting delays of an hour above normal journey times.

A spokesman for the government agency said: "National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.

"Due to the nature of this incident we are not able to advise how long the closure is likely to remain in place."
