At the height of the incident some 24 firefighters from six fire engines and a bulk water carrier were trying to bring the flames under control.

Crews were seen using hoses in an effort to extinguish the flames.

The field, which contained cut corn, was well alight by the time crews arrived.

They spent two-and-a-half hours battling the flames and left the scene at about 7.30pm.

A spokesman said there were no casualties reported from the incident and the cause has not yet been established.

The fire came amid a day of high temperatures and sunny weather with even hotter conditions expected today.
