Passengers jump off broken down train

Commuter chaos has been caused around Dartford after some passengers on a broken down train jumped off and walked along the tracks.

The Southeastern train ground to halt just outside Dartford after leaving London, just before 5pm.

Some passengers on a train behind that one then decided to get off and were spotted on the tracks in the Bexleyheath area.

Their actions are likely to have caused further chaos as Network Rail, who manage the track, have had to shut off power to the electrified third rail.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "We can understand people’s frustrations, but the actions of some commuters could possibly become a trespass incident."

A spokesman for Network Rail confirmed standard procedure would be to shut off the power if there were reports of people on the line.

Commuters venting their frustrations on Twitter have reported a person on the line at Bexleyheath, with many having problems getting out of London Victoria.

According to traffic alerts there are problems with trains from Charing Cross to Gillingham and signal problems have caused disruption in the Kentish Town and Sevenoaks areas.
