Construction to start on 60 new homes on site of former Harrington's Nursery in Swanley

Plans to build 60 new homes at a former plant nursery are set to go ahead after being given the green light.

Bellway acquired the five-acre site of Harrington's Nursery, in Highlands Hill, Swanley, last June.

It has since won approval from Sevenoaks council to forge ahead with an amendment to its original plans to include its own house types as part of a 60-home plot.

The development, which will be known as Highlands Grange, will comprise 36 two, three and four-bedroom houses for private sale, and 24 affordable homes.

The properties will be available through shared ownership or low-cost rent.

The site has an existing paddock, which will be retained to provide a new public open space with wildflower planting and a community orchard.

Highlands Grange will also have animal protection features like bat and bird boxes, insect hotels, habitat piles, and hedgehog highways.

Full planning permission was approved back in December 2020.

After purchasing the land, the developers submitted an application to update the designs of the homes.

Tom Sherriff, managing director of Bellway Thames Gateway, said: “We are pleased about the outcome of our planning application, as this means we will now be able to progress with our proposals to deliver high-quality new homes in the area.

"The development will provide much-needed new housing, supporting Sevenoaks council’s housing strategy which set out the need for 714 new homes per year in the district."

Mr Sheriff added: “Sitting on the north-east edge of Swanley, Highlands Grange benefits from a desirable location within walking distance of the town centre.

"And with a direct train line into London this site will also appeal to those working in the capital."

Bellway intends to release the first homes for sale this autumn, with the first properties being ready for their new owners to move into early next year.
