Huge queues formed at the Dartford Crossing after a car broke down on the bridge.
The A282 on the QEII Bridge was shut for almost an hour southbound over the River Thames as National HIghways referred to it as a “police incident”.
Significant tailbacks are said to be expected and although the road is now clear, long delays remain in the area in both directions.
There will be severe delays while traffic returns to normal.
Congestion is reported back to J29 of the M25 at Romford with delays also along the A13 approaching the motorway with Lakeside and Purfleet also jammed.
Queues are heading back to the Darenth Interchange on the anti-clockwise side due to preparations to reverse traffic flow through one of tunnels during the closure of the bridge.
The incident is now being managed by highways officers.
