He was first elected to the borough council in 1976. The former bank manager represented Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley until standing down at the May 2019 elections.

During his time as a councillor, Mr Coleman served on most committees.

He was also Mayor of Dartford on three occasions with his wife of 59 years, Doreen, serving as Mayoress.

Councillor Leader Jeremy Kite said: “This award is bestowed to those who the council feel has provided the borough with invaluable service."

The honour is rarely awarded – the last time was in 2005.

Mr Coleman said: “This is an incredible honour which must also reflect the support and encouragement that my wife, Doreen, and my family have given me throughout these years.

"It has been a great privilege to have served the people of Dartford."

The ceremony took place before coronavirus restrictions came into force.
