A councillor was taken to hospital after being struck by a ball thrown by an ex-international cricketer during a charity cricket match - and they were on the same team.

Cllr Chris Shippam, Conservative member for Dartford's Town ward, right, needed seven stitches in his lip after former Kent and England star Min Patel threw a ball to him.

MP Gareth Johnson formed a team of local public figures to take on Dartford Cricket Club on Sunday to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.

Cllr Shippam was due to keep wicket when the ball hit him in the face before the second innings began.

He said: "Min phoned me up afterwards and apologised, which was nice of him. He's probably used to chucking balls at Geraint Jones and other top class wicketkeepers who would catch it in their sleep.

"But it didn't spoil my day, the event was very enjoyable and went really well. I've had a word with Gareth about playing rugby next year as it's much safer!

"As well as Mr Johnson and Mr Patel, Dartford Borough Council leader Cllr Jeremy Kite and Dartford Mayor Cllr Eddy Lampkin took part.

The match also featured Messenger reporter Jamie Bullen and photographer Nick Johnson as well as members of Bluewater and Kent Police.

Speaking after the match, Mr Johnson said fundraisers had donated about £3,000 to the RBL and said he hoped it would become an annual fixture.

He said: "I am grateful to the players from both sides who have given up their time for this worthy cause.

"I am also very grateful to the companies and organisations that have generously sponsored the event."

Mr Johnson's team lost by two wickets in the final over of the match at Pilgrims Way, Dartford.
