A mother needed oxygen therapy after her two-year-old daughter accidentally started a fire in their first floor flat.

The blaze started after the youngster switched on the hob causing some items to catch alight.

Two Dartford fire crews rushed to the home in High Street, Greenhithe, at 10.15am on Wednesday.

The mother needed oxygen for smoke inhalation and the child escaped unhurt.

Following the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue issued a caution to parents to not leave children alone in the kitchen.

Dartford crew manager Vicki Brown said: "Children of this age are obviously unaware of the potential dangers of fire and it is for that reason that we urge all parents not to leave young children on their own in any room where there is a fire risk."
