Darent Valley Hospital starts coronavirus vaccine programme to help protect health workers and patients against Covid-19

Coronavirus vaccines have been issued to more front-line workers as another hospital started rolling out the jab.

Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford started giving the vaccine to its staff today and hailed it as "a very special day".

The first to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech jab was Dr Sanjay Kuravinakop, the hospital's chronic pain management consultant.

In a tweet, the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust said: "Today, is a very special day @DarentValleyHsp as we started to take part in the biggest vaccination roll out in #NHS history.

"Dr Sanjay Kuravinakop, Chronic Pain Management Consultant was the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, which was administered by Phil Gurnett."

The roll-out comes after anxious hospital workers said a lack of news from NHS chiefs and the government about the delayed arrival of vaccine doses was adding to staff stress.

The wait for the vaccine at Darent Valley had been made worse after trust chiefs were originally told by NHS England last month they would be one of the first to receive supplies of the Pfizer jab.

Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham and the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford had also already begun their vaccination programmes.
