For the town's MP the Dartford Crossing coming fourth in a list of the UK's most congested roads is no surprise.

Labour MP Dr vHoward Stoate said the section of road had been a bottleneck for many years and there was "no justification" for the tolls.

"Certainly something radical needs to be done about it," said Dr Stoate.

"Another crossing is needed but it should be located much further east towards Medway to take traffic away from the M25."

Dr Stoate praised the example of Fastrack buses, which have priority over traffic lights, in reducing congestion.

He added: "There are all sorts of examples where increased public transport can encourage people to leave their cars at home and take the bus."

Dr Stoate claimed 10 per cent of commuters in the area had already decided to use the bus rather than their own cars.
