Stone yoga teacher streams free classes to help people 'stay connected' during coronavirus isolation

As restrictions are put in place on social gatherings one yoga instructor has found a creative way to stay connected with her students.

Tammy Foster, 41, from Stone in Dartford is streaming free classes to ensure people's fitness and wellbeing is not compromised by the coronavirus outbreak.

Tammy Foster believes regular practice can help people cope with anxiety and other problems.

In a typical week the mum-of-two teaches Yoga Xtend at the Stone Pavillion in Greenhithe.

Now the sessions are being shown live on the Dartford Covid-19 mutual aid group, set up by residents to support one another during the period.

"As soon as I saw this group I wanted to help as much as I can," she said.

"I always look after my elderly neighbours but I thought if everyone is doing food shops and chemist runs how can I help?

"I started to think how I can help in a slightly different way."

Pitching her class at a beginner level, Tammy offers help on everything from stretching to mindfulness and breathing properly, something she says is more important than ever.

Some of the exercises can be practised from the comfort of a chair making it accessible to other groups of people, including older residents.

Tammy also works as a trained kinesiologist helping people recover from physical injuries and movement issues.

But it is not just about keeping people fit and active, it's also about staying connected, she says.

"My students are all my friends. We don't see each other as me the teacher and them the students," she said.

The mum-of-two will be running all her sessions online from next week.

"It is about maintaining that community connection. Even if I'm the one thing they can look forward to."

Tammy says the response so far has been overwhelming positive with many thanking her for helping them cope with panic attacks and anxiety.

She said: "My mission is to try to teach people to remain calm, and to be proactive with the health rather than reacting to the stress and the fear."

"When we go into lockdown that is when people are going to need a yoga practice more than ever."
