Tamarisk in Deal High Street closes for repairs after car ploughed into shop in March

A boutique in Deal which was structurally damaged when a car ploughed into the front window has closed for repairs.

More than five months after the collision which damaged the Tamarisk fashion store in the High Street, the shop has now closed for extensive work.

A steel beam which was a crucial support to the front of the building was jolted to the side and the bottom of it was completely crushed during the impact at 4.15am on Friday, March 4.

Owner Emma Ford opened up her shop again the next day and made it secure with wooden hoardings which were then decorated by artist Linda Warren, who was inspired by the garments that Tamarisk sells.

This week the store closed so that work can now begin on fitting a new shop window.

Mrs Ford said: “We hope the job will be finished within two weeks. As you can imagine, it’s frustrating being closed but I’m looking forward to having my shop front back.

“The driver was never found. I won’t give details of the cost of the damage but it is extensive, and structural.

“The entire shop front is being rebuilt.

“We will be holding a big party, with fizz, discounts and entertainment. This is our way of thanking our loyal customers who have stuck with us throughout this nasty experience.”

The driver did not stop and has not been traced despite the police investigation.

Mrs Ford said the incident was bad luck but on a positive note, the people of Deal have been amazing.

She added: “I can’t thank them enough.”

Tamarisk has been established in the town centre for eight years and its striking window displays was often what enticed customers inside.

At the time, the mother-of-two said: “At the moment it is absolutely freezing. People have been absolutely lovely and so supportive, it does just prove that being in a small community makes all of the difference.

“People have been offering their help, to clear up, bringing in teas and lunches and flowers – really it has been overwhelming.

“It was a terrible, terrible shock but actually no one was hurt as far as I know, the stock is all perfectly OK, the till completely untouched.

“It’s amazing really.”
