Call for councillor to resign over closure of toilets

A councillor has called on one of her colleagues to resign after two sets of public toilets were closed in Dover this week.

The doors were locked on the toilets at Buckland Bridge and Ladywell on Monday, with notices going up to say they would be out of use for the foreseeable future.

District council cabinet member for access Cllr Nigel Collor said: "It's because of the financial situation.

"Providing toilets is not a statutory function for the district council. We offered them to the town council, but we got a very bold 'no' from them.

"The toilets were not very well used in any case. We are open to discussions with the town council about their future.

"The toilets at Stembrook will remain open for the time being, but that depends on finances, too.

"We get less every year from the government and something has got to give.

"We were hoping that the other authorities would take over running the toilets, but Dover Town Council doesn't want to play ball.

"One could say that they have closed them, and not us."

Writing on the Dover Forum website, Cllr Sue Nicholas said: "If Nigel will not ... give a better explanation than he did in the Mercury he should resign.

"I think his actions serve no credibility at all. We have not even had the budget debates yet."

Dover Mayor Cllr Sue Jones told the Mercury: "The town council has handled matters correctly concerning our attempts for partnership working with Dover District Council.

"Though it is easy to use blame as a facet of our debate, the wishes of the taxpayer should be our priority. Accordingly, before any decisions are made I have asked the council to call a public meeting in January for this purpose."
