Football fans crammed into
Sainsbury's in Deal yesterday to help former Chelsea captain
Ron 'Chopper' Harris break a world record.

The 1960s and 1970s star signed a
mountain of photographs and caricatures as part of his bid to set a
record for the most signed autographs in a 12 month period.

Ron, who is collecting donations
for Down South - the charity he is patron of, began the
challenge in April, and is set to travel the country meeting
fans and raising funds to help people with the
condition.

"We had done a couple of
fundraising things before and then they asked me to become patron,
then we came up with this idea," said Ron, who will head to
Birmingham's NEC today with his team, headed by daughter
Claire.

As part of the campaign, he hopes
to walk from the Old Trafford ground in Manchester to Stamford
Bridge to mark the 40th anniversary since le lifted the FA Cup for
Chelsea in 1970.

If he can gain the club's
permission, he plans to walk an honorary lap of the pitch, holding
the newly-won FA Cup before it is handed back to the FA.
