People who spit in the street should be given on-the-spot fines, according to a Dover councillor.

Cllr Roger Walkden is urging Dover District Council to give its enforcement officers who already tackle litter and dog mess the same powers to deal with those who spit.

Cllr Walkden, who says he sees people spitting in the town, and particularly in Folkestone Road, claims the habit can spread diseases.

Waltham Forest council is the first in the country to impose instant fines for spitting, and says it's officers have issued about 30 penalty tickets since the rule was introduced in February.

Dover District Council has just recruited a team of enforcement officers to patrol the area and impose fines on those who drop litter or fail to clear up after their dogs.

Cllr Walkden says they - and Police Community Support Officers - should do the same to people who spit.

A spokesman for the district council said there were no plans to introduce fines for spitting at the moment, but it could be considered in the future.
