Deal & Betteshanger put up a brave fight but ultimately left East Sussex disappointed after a narrow 3-0 defeat to London 2 South East promotion chasers Lewes.

Playing on soft ground for the first time this season, and into a headwind, Deal matched the home side in a tight first half with both teams strong in the rucks, scrums and line-outs.

The Lions’ backs covered well, Matt Thomas was secure at full-back and Luke Armstrong made some telling runs on the wing and went close to an opening score, only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle.

After a scoreless first half, the home team kicked a penalty shortly after the restart to go 3-0 ahead and the defences were on top from then on.

John Harrington managed to tackle two Lewes backs at once before Thomas was forced off after a blow to the head.

The Lions had two potential tries held up near the line before the final whistle.
