House fire in Ham, Deal, destroys 80% of building

Firefighters have spent hours tackling a huge blaze that left 80% of a home destroyed.

The fire broke out at a former church in Updown Road in Ham, near Deal, at about 3.45pm yesterday.

Six fire engines were called to the scene and crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, which tore through the building.

A technical rescue team also attended to assess the safety of the remaining structure.

There were no reported injuries.

Fire crews were at the scene for about six hours, not leaving until just before 10pm.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service investigated the blaze and a spokesman today told Kent Online: "The cause is believed to be accidental due to a suspected electrical fault."

One last fire engine was seen leaving the premises this morning and the property entrance was left taped off by firefighters.

The house is in grounds that are dense with trees and vegetation and is a former church.

One local woman, who did not want to be named, said:"It's very sad. That building has been there for years, certainly in the 30 years I've been here."

The owner was not contactable but was understood to be supported by locals.

"He just needs space at the moment," one said.
