Dover Athletic have turned down a transfer request from star striker Adam Birchall.

The 26-year-old former Barnet player, who scored 45 goals for the Whites last season, has always made clear his desire to return to the Football League and Dover chairman Jim Parmenter has said he would not stand in Birchall's way if the club received a satisfactory bid.

However, last week Mr Parmenter received a written offer from Blue Square Premier club Newport County which the Whites chairman rejected, describing it "as derisory".

Mr Parmenter said: "Newport County's bid was an insult not just to the club but to Adam too. I understand Adam's ambition and it's no secret - but he is under contract for two more seasons.

"We don't believe that putting him on the transfer list is the right thing to do."
