Dover chairman Jim Parmenter was scathing in his criticism of Havant & Waterlooville after Monday night’s trip was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Mr Parmenter, pictured, was furious that his team and the supporters were not warned of problems. The referee called it off an hour before kick-off.

"I think it was unprofessional, discourteous," said Mr Parmenter.

"If the game is in doubt then the referee needs to be notified as do the team before they travel. Neither of those things were done.

"I’m going to push the league for compensation over our costs and I’m just sorry I can’t do the same for the 70, 80 supporters who were there."

Trevor Brock, secretary and director at Havant, said: "That’s absolute rubbish.

"The game, in our view, was playable on the morning of the game and so we didn’t think we needed to bring a referee in. We had three strong showers in the afternoon. What possible advantage would we get from making Dover travel?

"We’re also at a disadvantage as we had to pay out money. Unfortunately, it comes down to one man’s opinion and that’s the referee."
