Eleven Empty Spaces at Walmer

An exhibition looking back at the times of the IRA bombing in Deal in 1989 opens for three days on Thursday at Walmer Baptist Church.

Eleven Empty Spaces was created to mark the 20th year since the explosion at the Royal Marines School of Music, when 11 musicians died.

The project was on display at Dover Museum from June until earlier this month and Linda Mews, the project manager for the exhibition, was keen it should also be seen in Deal.

Walmer Parish Council made a donation towards the costs of Eleven Empty Spaces and its chairman Cllr Pat Heath said it was fitting it will be visiting the town.

He added: "We should not forget what happened that day in September 1989. The explosion happened at the barracks in Walmer and it is appropriate the display can be seen in this area."

Pastor Seyan Tills, from Walmer Baptist Church, said: "Staging the exhibition as we move towards Remembrance Sunday may kindle the importance of remembering the sacrifice of those in the armed services, then and now, which impact on families, friends and communities like ours today."

* Eleven Empty Spaces will be at Walmer Baptist Church Hall, Kelvedon Road, on Thurday and Friday from 11am until 6pm and on Saturday between 1am and 4pm.
