FIRE crews from across east Kent were called to a ferocious blaze at an industrial storage unit in Sandwich on Thursday January 27.

The building, Archer Low Farm in Sandown Road, was completely devastated despite six fire teams attacking flames from both sides and within.

Asbestos was found, and crews that had been using breathing apparatus inside the unit were stripped of their clothing and equipment for specialist cleaning to prevent contamination.

Deal firefighter Paul Copley said: "There was a big burn out and today the building is pretty much on its side."

Sandwich and Eastry retained crews were the first to attend after the alarm was raised at 7.49pm.

They were joined by Deal, Ramsgate, Wingham, Thanet, a command support unit from Dover and an incident support unit from Canterbury.

Police were at the scene and continue their investigations.

The cause is so far unknown.
