A cross-Channel ferry with almost 400 passengers on board became grounded because the crew did not realise a charted wreck nearby, according to an accident report.

The wreck - off the Kent coast at Deal - was invisible to the electronic chart on the P&O vessel Pride of Canterbury when the incident took place in January 2008.

But, according to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, the crew failed to consult a paper chart which would have alerted them to the danger.

The ferry made it to Dover unaided and nobody was hurt.
