The destination of wantaway Dover striker Adam Birchall remains unclear after AFC Wimbledon entered the race to sign him.

Birchall, who scored 46 goals for Dover last season, had been expected to join Swindon after they had a five-figure bid accepted for him on Saturday.

But Dover reported on Sunday that AFC Wimbledon have also had an offer accepted for the forward, who had a transfer request rejected two weeks ago.

Birchall is now talking to both clubs and subject to personal terms being agreed, one of the deals is expected to go through at the start of this week.

Birchall told Dover's website: "I just want to say to the Dover fans that the only reason I want to leave the club is to play League football.

"If Dover were a League side, I'd stay here for many more years to come - but this is perhaps my last chance to play on the League stage.

"Dover Athletic are a very special club and I'll never forget my time here. Last season, with the FA Cup run especially, was my greatest ever."

Gillingham had a bid for Birchall turned down on Friday morning by the Blue Square Bet South club.
