A petition has been handed into Dover District Council asking the authority to provide a building for a cultural centre for the town.

The petition was presented to members of the council's scrutiny (policy and performance) committee on Tuesday, October 13.

A building in Granville Street, at the corner of Churchill Street, has been identified as a possible centre for use by Muslims.

The petitioners say they do not want to rent the property, but say the centre would be used to help their community and would provide an area where prayers could be said. The centre would also be used to help integrate with other communities.

Councillors have been advised by officers that the Granville Street building is currently being marketed for sale, with offers being sought by the end of the month.

The result will be reported to the council's cabinet in December where any bids will be considered.

The committee is also asking the council's equality group to look at the issue of cultural centre provision.
