Lorries heading for industrial estate are squeezing through tight gaps in Middle Deal Road

Lorries passing through Middle Deal Road between parked cars have just “inches to spare” and are causing misery for people who live there.

That is the view of one Deal resident who has photographed the trucks attempting to squeeze through narrow gaps.

She said vehicles are frequently damaged because of the HGVs using the road to get to the industrial estates off Southwall Road.

The letter said: “Lorries do not stop or are unaware of damage caused.

“Some have to reverse out of Albert Road causing tailbacks in both directions. They also mount pavements.

“This is a constant and seemingly endless problem, with no other official support on offer.”

Cllr Trevor Bond, who represents Middle Deal and Sholden, said: “I have been aware of this for a long time but KCC Highways think it is adequate.

“The road is far too narrow for trucks and something needs to be done about it.

“I am pleased in a way that there is going to be another road way going into Minters Yard.”

Cllr Bond said the issue has been ongoing for eight years and at the time when plans were passed for the yard, he was the only one on the planning committee to oppose it.

“This resident is not alone in having this problem,” he said.

“We all need businesses and we all need jobs but we need to do it in a way that is balanced.”

A DDC spokesman said: “Should it amount to obstruction of the highway, that is an issue for the police who have powers to deal with this.”

A KCC spokesman said: "In terms of Middle Deal Road, residents are welcome to discuss the issue with us, and could consider setting up their own Lorry Watch scheme to monitor HGV traffic.

"If residents identify lories breaking local weight or width regulations, we can contact the operators with the help of Kent Police.”
