The money will go towards improving the historic town centre landmark, which is a Grade 1 listed building dating from the 12th century.

Chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s Anne Evans said: "We are overwhelmed at the grant which will offer the group an amazing opportunity.

"This is good news for the town and everybody. It is not something that comes easily, receiving a £39,000 grant, and the Friends are very pleased."

The grant and money raised by Friends of St Peter’s will help provide improvements for access for the disabled, a new reception desk and help the building become a bigger visitor attraction and asset to the community.

She added: "It is envisaged that works will complete some time in 2013 when a costumed procession through the town will take place to celebrate and mark the next phase of life at St Peter’s."
