St Richard's Church at the top of Mill Hill, Deal, is on the point of taking on a new identity as a base for the community in the area.

A cafe is opening soon, to be used as a drop in after the school run, and information about other events will be displayed on the notice board outside the building.

The Rev David Flewker from St Leonard's Church, which is in the same parish, said the new community development would be based within St Richard's Church.

He added: "The new venture would make the facilities available to all local groups, as part of the local church's commitment to serve its neighbourhood to the best of its ability.

"Out of the first public meeting the decision was taken to set up the Mill Hill Community Association in partnership with Dover District Council, the Co-op and others. After a lot of hard work dealing with necessary details we are now ready to move forward."

The first activity will be the opening on Monday, February 7, of Cafe Eden in St Richard’s hall from 9am to 11.15am.

Mr Flewker is inviting parents to drop in after the school run and Cafe Eden will be open on Monday and Friday mornings, being sponsored by the Co-op.

He added: "All comers are welcome and we hope this will be the first of many events to improve community life in our area. Just pop in for a friendly welcome and to find out more.

"Also, on Saturday, March 5, from 4pm to 6pm is another date to remember as this will be the first of a once a month children’s and adults Messy Church.

"If you have a flair for cooking and generally enjoy messing about with your children and food, come along and enjoy the time together."
