A two-masted sailing ship which took shelter off Deal has resumed its voyage to Spain.

The 493 gross-tonne Stavros Niarchos set sail from London on Monday, but had to take refuge in The Downs because of worsening conditions in the Channel.

She set sail again on Tuesday morning heading for the Bay of Biscay and on to Spain.

Built in 2000 and rigged in the style of a late 19th century brig, the ship is used for adventure training for people aged between 16 to 75.

Pete Legg, senior watch manager at Dover Coastguard Station, has sailed in her as a watch officer with the Tall Ships Sailing Trust. "She’s sailed all the way around the world in the nine years she’s been around training people about living with other people, seafaring, the elements and nature".
