Travellers leave site next to Deal Castle day after they 'overwhelmed' pub causing it to close early

Travellers who pitched up next to a Tudor Castle have now moved on.

Police have confirmed that the caravans and campervans who set up home next to Deal Castle yesterday afternoon have now left the site.

It comes after a two pubs were forced to close early after they became overwhelmed by the groups.

@DealPCSO has tweeted: "Deal Castle area is now clear."

It's understood officers worked with owners of the land English Heritage and Dover District Council to enforce action.

Police were called at 7.23pm yesterday to help disperse the group following a disturbance in the High Street area.

The Port Arms in Deal suffered some vandalism to its flower displays with smashed glass and playing cards strewn across the floor.

Landlady Nikki Pooke has taken the decision to close the pub today and says she will review the matter over the weekend.

Neighbouring pub The Kings Head has cancelled its weekend entertainment as a result.

Manager Jamie Cavall said: "It's the first time I've ever seen anything to this extent in Deal."

It is understood the travellers are on there way to Sandwich and some pubs in the town have been advised to close.
