Dover Athletic defender Connor Essam to leave the club

Connor Essam is set to leave Dover Athletic after being unable to commit to full time training.

Manager Andy Hessenthaler confirmed Essam would be leaving the club following the 2-0 defeat at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday.

Essam signed a two-year contract with Dover in the summer of 2017 after making a loan deal from Eastleigh permanent.

Hessenthaler said: “He will leave today (Tuesday). I have to do it as he can’t commit to it. He has another job and he has a chance to start that on Thursday.

“We need to go and find another centre-half to commit to full time training. I don’t blame him for that as he has to think about his future and his family. We have to think about ourselves and it’s not really fair on the rest of the group.

“I didn’t want to deal with it this quickly but I’m going to have to. He will be leaving the club after tonight.”

Hessenthaler expects there to be more signings in the near future and some of those could be from Ebbsfleet.

He added: “Ebbsfleet have some very good players and there will be a lot of clubs looking at that situation and maybe ready to pounce. Are we one of those? Yes probably.

“I have to have a conversation with a few players. I have started to bring a few of my players in am I’m sure they appreciate that. It’s difficult to move players on but we will have to work on that and are also going to have to work on bringing players in.”
