Dover Athletic manager Andy Hessenthaler reflects on National League win at Maidenhead

Andy Hessenthaler described Dover's 2-1 win at Maidenhead in the National League on Tuesday as a 'fantastic' three points.

Substitute Nassim L'Ghoul grabbed a 76th minute winner after Kurtis Cumberbatch's 25-yard drive after 18 minutes had been cancelled out by Danny Whitehall's fine strike just after the hour.

The result kept Dover in fifth and boss Hessenthaler said it was a gutsy display. He also revealed it was the first time he had been victorious at York Road.

He said: "This place is never easy to come to and I think it's the first time I've won here.

"It's difficult defending that end at times, it just sort of drags you back.

"We got our goal then they got one, a fantastic strike, but I don't think Worgs (goalkeeper Lee Worgan) has (otherwise) had a real shot to save.

"It was a fantastic strike from the lad and just gave them that lift.

"We got nervous, we sat off them and we panicked a little bit.

"Jai Reason was tiring, with the game at the weekend, there were a few, Ricky Modeste was out on his feet the shift he put in.

"We had to make a couple of changes. The goal (L'Ghoul's) gave us a new lease of life but they still put it on us.

"They're a difficult team to play against and they'll take a lot of points off teams so it's a fantastic three points.

"They'll probably be disappointed not to have got something out of the game second half and probably deserved to, but we got a goal pretty much out of noting and that happens.

"We dug in and we defended for our lives again at the end, the run continues away from home, we've just got to sort it out at home."

L'Ghoul's sweet curling finish was his first goal for the club since joining from Welling and Hessenthaler was not surprised by the quality of his strike.

He said: "I'm not trying to be clever but as soon as he got the ball I'm thinking he's going to score.

"I've seen him do it his training. What he does playing him on the right hand side, he'll come onto his favoured foot and the keeper can't save that, it's difficult to defend.

"I said to Darren (Hare) and Nicky (Southall) on the bench, that's a goal and it was, it was a great finish. That's what you need when you come to these sort of places.

"We've been on our travels for two games and we've picked up maximum points and that's six out of seven away from home which is incredible."

Whites are at home to FC Halifax on Saturday in a televised game which kicks-off at 5.20pm.
