Injury shatters Olympic hopeful's season

DOVER-born javelin thrower Kelly Morgan has decided not to compete during the 2003 season due to injury problems.

The 23-year-old broke the UK javelin record three times in 2002, throwing 63.03m at the Aqua-Pura Commonwealth Trials and 63.87m and 64.87m at the Norwich Union Trials and AAA Championships.

But her shoulder injury restricted her performance at the year's major championships and, following the latest setback, she is now concentrating on next year's Olympics in Athens.

She said: "A successful shoulder operation has given way to a secondary problem which results in pain when attempting to throw. Unfortunately, the amount of time required to recover means that I must miss this season in order to give myself every chance to be all guns blazing for the Olympic year.

"Although I am desperately disappointed, the experienced medical and coaching support team around me is ensuring that the dream of next year becomes a very definite reality."
