Dover Athletic midfielder Stuart Lewis to leave the National League club

Midfielder Stuart Lewis has played his last game for Dover.

Lewis arrived at Crabble on a two-year deal after leaving Maidstone in the autumn and has been a key figure in Dover's successful battle against relegation.

The 31-year-old opened the scoring in Saturday's 3-0 home National League win over Sutton United but afterwards boss Andy Hessenthaler revealed that the former Barnet man had already revealed his intention to leave.

Hessenthaler said: "He came to see me on Thursday, he's still got a year left on his contract but unfortunately I just don't think he can commit to the full-time training any more and the travelling.

"He's been really honest, he is under contract but he's decided to finish today. It was fitting that he scored a goal as well.

"I think he's looking at perhaps going to play part-time football now, closer to home, he's got a family, he's got other commitments as well that he wants to pursue. He's looking towards his own future and I get that.

"True class about the man, he's been honest and came and spoken to me. He could have left it until we came back in July but he's done it now so credit to him. He goes with my best wishes.

"He came in and he's been a massive part of what we achieved this season."

Goalkeeper Mitch Walker has been released, ending his seven-year stay at the club, but Hessenthaler says a number of out of contract players have been offered new deals, among them skipper Mitch Brundle.

He added: "We've already spoken to players we want to keep who are out on contract and it's going to be down to them, they're going to have other options.

"Mitch Brundle, I'm sure has, we want him to stay, we've made him an offer to stay and he's going to think about things.

"Bedsente Gomis as well, I've spoken to him, Anthony Jeffrey is another one, and Bobby Joe Taylor, so we'll have to see what happens."
