Dover Athletic striker Stefan Payne says there was no way anyone else was going to take the last-minute penalty against Woking

Stefan Payne insisted there was no way he was going to shy away from taking the
last-minute penalty that proved to be the match-winner in the 2-1 success against Woking at Crabble on Monday.

Not even if it meant defying Whites boss Chris Kinnear.

The former Gillingham striker had missed a penalty at Wrexham two games earlier and says he was determined to make amends after Ricky Modeste had been bundled over.

Payne, Whites’ leading scorer with 14 in Vanarama Conference, said: “The gaffer wanted Sol (Solomon Taiwo) to take it but there was no way I was going to let that happen.

“I owed it to the team and myself to take it and score after what happened at Wrexham – no one else was going to take it.

“I felt comfortable and confident that I could take it and I put it away well.”

But did he have any nerves given the situation of the game?

He said: “None at all. I knew where I was going to put it and I did.

“You can’t afford to think about anything else other than taking it (the penalty) at times like that.”
