Dover Athletic's Sean Raggett says he would have tried to usurp Nicky Deverdics had Whites been given a late penalty against Aldershot

Defender Sean Raggett said referee David Rock's decision not to award Whites a late penalty probably helped him avoid a spat with team-mate Nicky Deverdics during Saturday’s 5-2 Vanarama National League win over Aldershot.

Raggett’s two second-half goals put the gloss on another excellent home performance by Chris Kinnear's side, and when substitute Tom Murphy was sent tumbling in the box by Rhys Browne, he thought he might have a chance to complete a memorable hat-trick.

The 21-year-old England C centre-half explained: “When Murph went down I thought the referee was going to give us a penalty. I thought I would be arguing with Devs (regular penalty taker Deverdics) to see who would take it.

“He said to me after the game that I would have had to have got down on my knees and beg him!”

Raggett admitted he took a gamble on the ball reaching him for his first goal while the second was all about the delivery of Deverdics’ free-kick.

“It was a great ball in by Devs but I was leaning back a bit and stretching so I just tried to get some contact on it and luckily it went in,” he added.

Raggett’s double - the first time he has scored twice in a competitive game - took him to four for the season - and moved him two clear of central defensive partner Jamie Grimes with whom he has a competition to see who scores most goals this season.

He added: “I don’t think he was very happy on Saturday. I was 2-1 down (earlier in the season) and I told him then I would overtake him.

"The competition’s more for a bit of banter than anything and I definitely don’t not want him to score. He had a goal disallowed at Chester (where Whites drew 1-1) and I was fuming because it stopped us winning the match.”
