Havant & Waterlooville 0 Dover Athletic 0 - match report

Dover had to settle for a point after failing to break down 10-man Havant in their National League contest at Westleigh Park on Saturday.

The Hawks played a man short for almost an hour after centre-half Chris Robertson was sent off 10 minutes before half-time.

Dover's Jai Reason missed the game's two best chances, either side of half-time, while Havant might have snatched it right at the death but for a goalline clearance by Whites debutant Danny McNamara.

The result means it's just one defeat in 11 for Whites but they remain 19th, immediately below their Hampshire rivals on goal difference.

The Whites starting line-up showed one change to the side which had held Bromley with nine men at Crabble the week before.

Bedsente Gomis missed out after his red card in that game, with loan signing McNamara being handed his debut at right-back and skipper Mitch Brundle moving into midfield.

Winger Anthony Jeffrey was ruled by an ankle injury, while among the substitutes was former Havant striker Alfie Pavey, whose only goals for Whites so far have come against his former club.

Whites made a positive start forcing three corners in the opening 10 minutes. From one of those Jamie Allen went down in the box but referee Neil Finnie waved away Dover's penalty appeal.

Havant's Robertson picked up an early booking after catching Inih Effiong and that tackle was to have big repercussions for the home defender before the first half was out.

Dover enjoyed plenty of possession but other than a shot on the run by Brundle which was deflected for a corner chances were at a premium.

Havant created even less, with Matt Paterson's glancing header their only other effort of any note.

Havant skipper Rory Williams and Dover's Stuart Lewis both then picked up bookings for fouls, before the half's fourth yellow led to a red for Robertson.

The big centre-half pulled at Allen as the Dover striker tried to set off after a through ball and was shown a second yellow card.

Almost immediately Dover could have been in front when Debayo crossed to the near post and Reason got in front of his marker only to head over.

There was a sense at half-time that the game was there for the taking and Whites certainly came out full of intent.

They should have broken the deadlock in the 55th minute when Reason was played in but home keeper Ben Dudzinski stood up well and blocked with his chest.

Dover had a scare just before the hour when Williams swung over a corner which smacked against the bar.

Suddenly the 10-men had their tails up, and just after Reason was booked for a robust challenge Williams was unhappy after a sliding challenge by McNamara which went unpunished.

Kevin Lokko directed a header over from a corner and then got up well to meet McNamara's cross but his effort was straight at Dudzinski.

Havant were defending for their lives but were almost gifted a goal on 72 minutes when Mitch Walker's poor clearance was miscontrolled by Taylor, giving Wes Fogden a sight of goal but Scott Doe was well placed to tidy up on the line.

Allen and McNamara both saw efforts blocked as Whites tried to find that elusive goal but Havant continued to keep their defence honest with Walker having to grab sub Tyler Frost's 25-yard drive at the second attempt.

The home side finished the game on the offensive with Lokko and crucially McNamara both making desperate clearances.
