Traffic queues at Brenley Corner roundabout at Faversham affecting A2, M2 and A299 Thanet Way

One of Kent's busiest junctions has been beset by lengthy queues for days as traffic is funnelled through just one lane.

Drivers using Brenley Corner at Junction 7 of the M2 at Faversham are facing long delays while restrictions are in place to allow highways officials to turn Dover-bound lorries around.

Traffic is crawling towards the notorious roundabout where the M2, A2 and A299 Thanet Way meet, with tailbacks stretching in all directions.

Two lanes have been reduced to one to allow HGVs heading for Dover or the Channel crossings to be diverted to rejoin the Operation Brock queues on the M20 at Junction 8.

The system aims to keep the M20 moving when services are disrupted across the Channel.

It was put in place earlier this week as a precaution in response to reduced ferry capacity at Dover caused by operator P&O.

But motorists have been facing huge disruption, which has been worsened by a number of accidents in the area.

Yesterday morning, traffic ground to a halt due to a crash on the M2 between junctions 6 for Faversham and 5 for Sittingbourne, which had a knock-on effect on the roundabout.

Then in the early evening, several vehicles collided on the London-bound A2 near Boughton-under-Blean, leaving drivers stuck in queues stretching for miles for more than two hours.

No one was seriously injured.

The junction is often heavily congested, and there are fears it could become "permanently gridlocked" if thousands of homes are built on nearby land.

It is due to undergo improvements after being recognised by Highways England as one of the UK's worst accident blackspots.
