Firefighters called to East Street, Faversham, after early morning blaze

Fire crews put out a blaze at a flat in Faversham on Thursday morning.

They were called to the terrace in East Street close to the junction with Church Road at 6.05am after a man and woman were woken by a smoke alarm in their bedroom.

It had detected smoke coming from an airing cupboard.

Kent Fire Rescue Service says that the fire started because clothes had dropped on to a lamp inside the cupboard.

The couple escaped the flat safely and called for help.

Crews using breathing apparatus tackled the fire and ventilated the flat which had some internal damage.

They left the scene at just after 7am.
