Part of a Kent motorway was closed for several hours after scheduled overnight road repairs went on longer than expected.

Drivers travelling coastbound on the M2 were told to expect delays at it remained shut between J5 A249 (Sittingbourne / Stockbury Roundabout) and J6 A251 Ashford Road (Faversham).

Overnight works on the 16km stretch were due to be finished by 7am but National Highways confirmed that due to “unforeseen circumstances”, they had overrun.

Traffic was being diverted via local routes with the motorway finally opened to traffic at around 11.30am.

It comes as there is further disruption for drivers in Stockbury Valley as the A249 southbound is also closed because of to major roadworks from M2 J5 (Sittingbourne / Stockbury Roundabout) to Rumstead Lane (Hucking Turn Off).

These works are part of improvements to the Stockbury roundabout which includes constructing a new flyover.

There will be no access on the A249 from Oad Street or South Green Lane until March, 30.

Until then, drivers are instructed to turn around at J4 to exit coastbound for Sittingbourne, or the A229 Blue Bell Hill from J3 Chatham, to go south to the M20.
