The white Citroen C1 left the carriageway in heavy rain and hit a tree on the embankment, trapping a woman who had to be rescued from the vehicle by fire crews.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Three fire engines and the technical rescue team attended and crews used hydraulic cutters, spreaders and rams to create space and remove the roof of the car to release a casualty.

"The person was left in the care of the South East Coast Ambulance Service."

She was taken to a London hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition with life-threatening injuries.

Officers from the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for information and dashcam footage of the incident.
