Faversham Town manager James Collins says his team team are still a work in progress

Faversham Town boss James Collins says he is looking forward to building an identity with the club moving forward, but insists the team are still a work in progress.

The Lilywhites, who lost 2-0 to Ashford on Saturday before Tuesday’s match at Haywards Heath was postponed, sit 16th in Isthmian South East on 21 points.

“I thought overall Ashford were the better side than us all over the park and 2-0 was a fair result,” he said.

“Individually I don’t think anyone had a particularly great game, but as a team we did okay we just fell short a little bit – as much as it pains me to say that, sometimes you just have to take it on the chin.”

Despite sitting just nine points off the play-offs, Faversham have scored the joint-fewest goals this season – 17 – alongside Ramsgate but Collins says recent signings striker
Paul Hayes and midfielder Solomon Taiwo will bolster the team, starting with this weekend’s home game against Cray Valley.

He added: “We’ve managed to get some points on the board and had a good win against Chichester, but more importantly we’ve brought some players.

“I think we look a lot stronger now than what we have done in previous weeks. What we need to do now is get some continuity with the players and create an identity for ourselves because I feel like I’ve got a squad I’m happy with

“I want us to be competitive and build something for the long-term, and I certainly think we can string some wins together, but we’re still very much a work in progress and I’m taking it week-by-week at the moment.

“I think we’ve brought in 12 players since we’ve been
here and that’s quite a turnaround in eight weeks
so we’re giving players the chance to stake a claim for the future.

“Our home record is good but we haven’t won a game or picked up a point away from home since I’ve been at the club, so that’s definitely something we need to work on.”

He continued: “Saturday’s another chance to see how we’re going with our new players so I’m excited to see how we’re going to progress.

“Cray’s form is a bit patchy at the moment but they’ve got some very good players so it will be another tough game.”
