Faversham Town boss Sammy Moore concedes task of lifting club off foot of Isthmian South East is much tougher than he thought

Manager Sammy Moore concedes the job at Faversham is harder than he first thought.

Moore joined in November but has only picked up two points from his first six competitive matches, with the Lilywhites now well adrift at the bottom of Isthmian South East.

Their latest loss on Tuesday saw Town beaten 3-0 at Salters Lane by high-fliers Beckenham after a dismal first-half display.

“We didn’t realise the mess the club was in, to be honest, when we took over,” Moore said.

“There was no real structure here. They were training once a week and I could go on an endless list.

"We’ve had to change the mentality of the place and do various stuff that’s going to give us a chance.

“We have attracted good players to this club.

"We have brought in some good signings but, unfortunately when you are down the bottom, there’s that pressure on every game to try and win a game of football.

“Football is a game of opinions but, for me, on Tuesday, we needed to give ourselves a chance by running through brick walls. I didn’t think we did that.

“I didn’t feel it was a performance that showed we are at the bottom of the league, if I’m honest, and I was hurt by that.

“It’s tough. The only way is up and we just need to train Thursday, prepare right and try to do something Saturday.

"Then we go to another game that we have got to try and win.

“We need wins quickly but it’s hard to put our finger on why that happened because it was such a good performance away from home [last Tuesday in a 2-2 draw at Haywards Heath] and we just didn’t turn up.”

Faversham defender Emmanuel Dasho’s mistake allowed Freddie Cray to volley in for the visitors in the 11th minute and, 11 minutes later, Beckenham captain Danny Waldren bundled home a corner.

Moore himself was cautioned on 37 minutes for tripping an away player and Steven Townsend bundled in Beckenham's third just before half-time.

He reflected: “It wasn’t good enough. We lost the game, first half.

“When you are down the bottom, you have got to fight tooth and nail to get three points.

"I didn’t think we had enough energy, we lost all the duels across the field in terms of first and second balls, and we were nowhere near it.

“First goal, it’s an individual mistake from Dasho, he’s got to do better. It was nowhere near good enough, first half, and not what we pride ourselves on as a team.

“Second half, we huffed and puffed, but the game was gone.”

Moore made a triple change at half-time and the Lilywhites played better after the restart, although debutant keeper Bailey Vose did have to pull off more good saves.

Town’s boss said: “He did well. I don’t think any of the goals were his fault and his kicking was good.

“But we have got to give him a chance and we haven’t.”

With Moore’s men having taken just nine points from 22 league fixtures, they are 12 points adrift of third-bottom Sittingbourne and 14 points from total safety, having played more games than their relegation rivals.

Moore said: “It’s going to be tough, we knew that.

"We knew the situation when we first came in. We said that the damage might already have been done.

“We’ve had to change the whole nucleus of the team and it isn’t easy to change that when you’re coming up to February. You need them to gel and do that in pre-season.

“The players care. It’s just disappointing that we are giving teams goals in the wrong moments in the game.

“The games are running out, it’s going to be tough, but we knew the situation we were coming into.”

Faversham - who this season have used more than 50 players, including five keepers - are without a fixture this Saturday. They visit Littlehampton on Tuesday for a rearranged match.

The sides met on January 7 but, with the away team leading 2-1 through two Zak Ansah goals, play was abandoned midway through the second half due to torrential rain.

“I think our away form has been better,” Moore said.

“We have had a bit of bad luck.

“That game, we should [already] have got three points from and, at Haywards Heath, we should have got three points.

“All of a sudden, one win could change it around.”

Goalkeeper George Bentley has left the club.
