Faversham Town manager Ray Turner aiming secure Ryman League play-off place in addition to League Cup Final place

Ray Turner has his sights set on a glorious double of a Ryman League play-off campaign and a cup final – and he wants his Faversham players to enjoy the ride.

Town boss Turner says the fact he was disappointed with only a point against champions-elect Folkestone on Saturday shows how far his young side have come.

Next up for Town on Saturday is a trip to Whitstable (3pm) in Division 1 South, while they face a Swale derby at home to Sittingbourne on Tuesday (7.45pm) in the semi-final of the League Cup.

Turner said: “There’s no reason why this season can’t see us make the top-five and a cup final which would be fantastic for the club.

“We’ve been playing much better and Saturday was another step up in maturity for the young players. We showed belief, even when we went behind. Hopefully, we can take the confidence forward and enjoy the last 10 or 11 games this season.”

Turner says he has a gut feeling the play-off race will come down to the final game when Town – now sixth, outside the play-off places on goal difference, though with a game in hand – host Hythe, currently two points behind.

He said: “I can’t shake the feeling that that game will have something on it and to be honest, I’d take that – needing to win to get in.

“We’ve taken four points against the runaway leaders this season but it should have been six. We did the same against Worthing who have been up there all year, too. We only have games against teams below us now, so it’s up to us to replicate that form.”

Whitstable are rock-bottom but although Wayne Wilson has left the Belmont to join Ramsgate and Dean Grant is suspended, Turner added: “Stuart King has done well since he’s gone there (all three are former Faversham players).

“Derbies are awkward enough without all the close connections but we know what we need to do on Saturday, we just want the points.”

Josh Stanford and Kieron Campbell are set to feature but are cup-tied for the visit of the Brickies to Salters Lane.

Turner added: “To be honest, the competition has only become a big deal due to it being a semi-final, a derby, against another Division 1 side.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to make a final but we will not take them lightly.”
