Faversham manager Ray Turner refused to make excuses after losing to Ramsgate

Ray Turner says the only good thing about Faversham’s surprise home defeat to Ramsgate is that it will get rid of any complacency after their lightning start to the season.

Town won 5-0 at VCD Athletic on Saturday to set the early pace in Bostik South but just three days later they were shocked 2-1 by Ramsgate at the Shepherd Neame Stadium and Turner admitted: “It has certainly been a rollercoaster few days but that’s football.”

The Lilywhites battled back from 2-0 down and thought they had equalised when Jordan Casey nodded home a loose ball late on, only for the goal to be incorrectly chalked off for offside in the build-up.

Turner admitted: “There were some frustrations from the night and a couple of big calls didn’t go our way, but we do not want to make excuses – the players know they missed a good opportunity to back-up what was a super result on Saturday.”

He added: “Ramsgate were very good, especially in the first-half, and deserved their lead. We had to chase back from 2-0 down and we could have done it.

"The goal we had disallowed would have made it 2-2, but we are not going to make cheap excuses.

“It doesn’t detract from the fact that we had got ourselves in a position when we were deservedly two goals down and needing to chase the game.

“Rather than making excuses we first need to look within to see why we were in that situation.

"If there was any complacency after the way we started on Saturday then Tuesday will have well and truly put that to bed. The boys were really disappointed and want to get back to it.”

Town travel to Croydon on Saturday for their preliminary round tie in the FA Cup – though Turner admits he would rather be making the short trip up the A299 to Whitstable, whom Croydon edged out 3-2 in the previous round.

Turner said: “Personally I’d have preferred to be going there, I think it would have been a good derby game and a big crowd of probably 400 plus.

“Croydon will be nowhere near as atmospheric as that – we’re going to have to go there and do a professional job and put the disappointment of Tuesday behind us.”
