Cheriton: Mother with broken boiler demands compensation after being left cold 'for weeks'

A mother is demanding hundreds of pounds in compensation after being left without heating or hot water for nearly eight weeks.

Mandy Kibble, of Broomfield Crescent, Cheriton, said she had been using four small mobile heaters after her boiler broke.

The 37-year-old said that she feels like her home provider Town & Country Housing Group have “left her with nothing”.

Her complaints have been directed to Swale Heating and, despite engineers coming out on a number of occasions, the problem has not been resolved.

The mother-of-three said the cold house has affected her sons Ricky-James, 13, who has ADHD and tourettes and Franky, nine, who has ADHD and autism.

She said Ricky-James has come down twice with the flu since the problem started.

She said: “Because the boiler is electric, it is costing me a fortune to run even though it is not working.

“I have seen the difference from when I first moved here in July to January on how much I have been topping up and how much it is swallowing.

Swale Heating’s sales director Matthew Edwards said the delay had been because a required part has been “unobtainable.”

Mr Edwards said: “We are concerned that Mrs Kibble has been inconvenienced by the continuing problem with the air source heat pump.

“It has proved particularly difficult to find the necessary part and our search has extended to other countries.

“As a goodwill gesture, Swale Heating offered Mrs Kibble compensation for her increased electricity costs, but she has rejected our offer.”

Mrs Kibble said she was offered a £100 voucher, which she said is not enough.

She said: “I have spent way more than that on the electricity alone.

“It doesn’t even cover a hotel for us to bath for a couple of nights. The fact my son has been ill twice in two months is bad on their part as I cannot get the house warm enough for it to remain warm.

“We are not sleeping well because we wake up freezing cold so I would like them to consider some form of compensation for the fact we have been living in these conditions.

“What has been offered doesn’t come nowhere near.”

A spokesman for Town & Country Housing said: “We appreciate Mrs Kibble’s frustration as it is always difficult when there are problems with heating and hot water.

“Swale Heating is in regular contact, updating Mrs Kibble frequently as well as attempting to find a supplier for the part required.

“We understand that her electricity has increased due to the temporary heaters that were provided.

“Swale Heating asked Mrs Kibble to supply bills to enable them to provide compensation based on the increased usage.

“As with all reported issues, we are taking this very seriously and all parties are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”
