Playground at Lower Leas Coastal Park reopened after landslips in Folkestone

A children’s play site has reopened after a series of landslips in the area.

Folkestone and Hythe District Council announced on Facebook on Friday: “We've reopened the section of the Lower Leas Coastal Park play area that was closed off for a short time – it can be enjoyed safely once more.”

The area has had at least nine landslides this year, caused by a combination of excess wind, unstable ground and weight of trees during high winds possibly be weakening the stability of the cliff.

Areas affected have included Lower Sandgate Road, and Sunny Sands and the Road of Remembrance.

FHDC, in updates on its website, says it is using a drone to survey the area from the harbour and along the Road of Remembrance. That route has had a series of slips and is expected to stay shut until the summer.

The council website said: “Safety for the public and our workforce and contractors is paramount. Areas that the district council is responsible for will only be re-opened once work in the affected areas is completed.”
