The family-run site has operated out of the signal box at Folkestone Harbour since May 2019.

But owners John and Alex Grantham made the difficult decision after rising costs and seating issues stunted the business.

The husband-and-wife duo, who have recently welcomed a son, announced the news on social media yesterday.

"This has been a difficult decision to make and we just want to thank our regulars, friends, family and everyone who has visited us over the three or so years," they added.

"A big thank you for your love and support, we have enjoyed every minute of it, but it's time to focus on other things.

"Our last day of trading will be Monday, January 30. We will be running stock down so will be doing bagels and food till Sunday and be open on Monday for coffee and any sweet treats we will have left.

"On Sunday at 3pm we would love to invite everyone who has supported us down to say goodbye and to have a toast to our first business venture."

The Granthams will continue to run the Taco Shed in the goods yard on the arm, and their restaurant Cabron in Rendezvous Street.

Speaking to KentOnline, Mr Grantham said the bakehouse had struggled to turn a profit recently.

"We are very sad about having to close, this was our first baby but there was nothing we could do without us working there full time," he explained.

"Over the last six to eight months we have been trying to keep it at least breaking even, not paying ourselves and keeping staff on but after a poor December we have been left with no choice."

Following the announcement, customers took to social media to pay tribute to the business, with many describing it as "the end of an era".

One resident said: "So sad to see this. You should both be so proud of what you have achieved at Bobbies the past couple of years. So proud of you both, and here’s massive luck to the new venture Cabron."

Another added: "So very excited for you both with your new venture. Can't wait to try it out.

"Will miss the signal box though and those delicious smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels."
